FEATURES: Panoramic views to the east of
both the Mogollon Rim and Munds Mountain. To the west, Oak Creek winds through the valley below like a diamond faceted snake reflecting the afternoon sun. Unusual rock formations line the way. LEVEL: Moderate-Difficult HIKING TIME: Approximately three hours roundtrip. DRIVING TIME FROM THE INTERSECTION OF 89A AND SR 179: About five minutes.
DESCRIPTION: The beginning of the trail utilizes a Forest Service
route but then branches off onto a little known path that climbs through Arizona Cypress trees past smooth rock canyons into the clouds. Where it perches atop a saddle between two buttes and provides a rare opportunity for 180 degree views in
two directions.
This monolith may be seen when approaching the first
tower near the top of the mesa. The Indian Guardian
overlooks the entire valley to the west. Some Native
American tribes believe that their ancestors have turned to stone and still guard these sacred areas.
