FEATURES: One of a very few accessible loop hikes. Arches, and panoramic views and unusual rock formations. LEVEL:
Moderate-Difficult (due only to the time).
HIKING TIME: Approximately four hours round trip.
DRIVING TIME FROM THE INTERSECTION OF 89A AND SR 179: About ten minutes.
DESCRIPTION: This hike employs part of an official Forest Service trail that dips and winds through a series of hills and valleys providing views of unusual monuments such as The Mitten and Steamboat Rock . The next leg of the trail climbs up a steep but wide slope to the top of a mesa. It crosses that mesa and diverts to an unofficial trail that snakes past a trio of arches. Finally on the trip down from the mesa there are a plethora of visual feasts-- be careful that you are not so awed by the sights that you don't pay attention to where you are stepping. The trail levels out and returns to the starting point.
